As we move into the New Year, it seems that all that is old is new again. According to the latest Jobs Report, the African American unemployment rate is 86% higher than that of whites. In fact at 15.8 it’s the highest of any of the major work groups. “We have now added jobs every single month for a year,” said Heidi Shierholz of the Washington, D.C.-based Economic Policy Institute. “So you would think that there would be labor force growth, these missing workers starting to come back in. Not only is that not happening, it’s actually starting to go in the other direction. There’s never been a pool of missing workers this large. It’s not clear to me when they’ll come back.”

Corporate jobs? Fortune magazine reported that the 500 largest U.S. companies cut a record 821,000 jobs in 2009 while their collective profits increased threefold to a record $391 billion.

Surely Black America is starting to get the message, “DO FOR SELF” by now! Don’t you want some change? Here are some things I would like to see under the CHANGE banner for Black America in this New Year:

(1) Black people working together in UNITY,

(2) Black businesses being developed and growing with adequate technical skills, capital and consumer support,

(3) Black consumers understanding the importance of "selective patronage" and "reciprocity" from those we spend our dollars with,

(4) Building generational wealth across the Black community that enables us to control our community economically, politically, socially, and through improved education and school systems,

(5) Building a sense of Black race esteem, self-esteem, and pride that generates even greater love for self and all,

(6) Connecting with our Brothers and Sisters across the global Black Diaspora using technological tools and advancements in ways that empower us even further.

Remember what President Obama said when he was campaigning; "We don't ask you to believe in our ability to bring change, rather, we ask you to believe in yours."

Are YOU ready to make change?

Peace,

Norm

KIDNEY SWAP REQUIRED: SCOTT SISTERS FREED FROM U.S. JAIL silicone_mask

Two African-American sisters who spent 16 years in jail for a robbery that netted 11 dollars were released Friday under a deal which could see the younger sister donate a kidney to her ailing sibling.

At a news conference, Jamie Scott, the older of the two sisters who were serving double life sentences for acting as accomplices in a 1993 armed robbery, wiped tears from her eyes as she blurted out thanks for finally being free.

"I never thought this day would come when I would be on the outside of the walls, when I been so down on the inside of the walls. Now I'm out where I can get me some decent medical treatment and everything like that and I'm so grateful, so grateful," said Jamie Scott, who has kidney failure. READ MORE

BUILDING AN ALLIANCE TO AID BLACK FILMS

LOS ANGELES, CA - Ava DuVernay, the filmmaker and publicist, imagines a time when Black-theme pictures will flourish in places where African-American film festivals have already found eager viewers.

“Fifty such cities would be an ideal Black-film circuit, Ms. DuVernay said. In March she'll start with five.

The plan is to put Black-theme movies in commercial theaters, initially from the independent film program recently begun by the AMC theater chain, for a two-week run supported by social networks, mailing lists and other buzz-building services at the disposal of allied ethnic film festivals .

The films will not be part of normal festival programs, but will screen in all cities simultaneously with promotional backing from the festival organizations, which will share in revenue. The inaugural group of backers is expected to include the Urbanworld Film Festival in New York, the Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles, the ReelBlack Film Series in Philadelphia, the BronzeLens Film Festival in Atlanta and the Langston Hughes African American Film Festival in Seattle.

And if Ms. DuVernay is correct in her belief that African-American viewers want more movies than they are getting from conventional distributors, the movement will eventually reach about four dozen cities where Black-oriented festivals have been gaining strength, even as black film languishes in the studio world. CRAZY WHITE MEN: AMERICA'S SILENT TERRORISTS

Gifford Laughner

The recent act of domestic terrorism that has occurred in Tucson, Arizona is the latest by a group of radical extremists that few want to speak about openly: Crazy White Men. As we continue to ignore the warning signs of this group of domestic terrorists, the lives of a great number of Americans are put in danger. Instead of patting down women like Meera Shankar, India’s ambassador to the United States — more resources need to be directed towards stopping America’s real terrorists: Crazy White Men. Until mainstream America comes to grips with this group, they will continue to run rampant and commit the senseless and despicable violent acts as we’ve just witnessed.

It’s unfortunate that Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Arizona, is in critical condition. It’s heartbreaking that 9-year-old Christina Taylor Greene has lost her life. It’s gut-wrenching that a federal judge, John M. Roll, with 40-years of service to his country dies as a victim of domestic terrorism.  But if mainstream America continues to deny the existence of this group of inside extremists more innocent lives will be lost and we will all live in a state of heightened terror.

Let’s be clear, the alleged gunman, Jared Loughner, 22, is in custody and must suffer the consequences of his mis-guided actions. But I can’t help but wonder if officials could have intervened in this man’s life before he flew over the edge. There were numerous opportunities. He tried to enlist in the US Army and was rejected. He was arrested by police three times. And yet even with this criminal record, he was still able to purchase a firearm “legally” and then go on the most horrific shooting spree in recent memory. Would a Black man have been able to do the same thing? A Muslim? We know the answer.

According to Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, Arizona is America’s “mecca for racism and bigotry”. He added, “Let me say one thing, because people tend to pooh-pooh this business about all the vitriol that we hear inflaming the American public by people who make a living off of doing that,” the sheriff said during a press conference. “That may be free speech, but it’s not without consequences.”

The fact that none of this man’s social media friends tipped off authorities is sad. But to portray Loughner as a “lone wolf” is ludicrous. Read the comments section on sites like huffington post, CNN, USA Today, and of course FOX “news” and you will know immediately that the thoughts expressed in the YouTube site of Loughner are echoed by any number of Crazy White Men online. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

I was happy to do a radio interview with author Rebecca Skloot (listen here), as we discussed her best-selling book which tells the story of Henrietta Lacks, who died broke, but whose cells make billions of dollars. Below is an excerpt from the book, titled: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.Immortal Life of Henrietta LacksIt’s a fascinating story and a book everyone should own.

Rebecca has appeared on numerous media outlets to discuss this amazing story including ABC News with Diane Sawyer. Henrietta Lacks was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells — taken without her knowledge — became one of the most important tools in medicine.

If you could pile all HeLa cells ever grown onto a scale, they’d weigh more than 50 million metric tons — as much as a hundred Empire State Buildings. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the effects of the atom bomb; helped lead to important advances like in vitro fertilization, cloning, and gene mapping; and have been bought and sold by the billions.  READ MORE

WHEN "NUT" AIN'T ENOUGH |  By Mumia Abu-Jamal (with audio)

Mumia Abu Jamal

The recent massacre in Tucson, Arizona has shown an unflattering light on America in the 21st Century. What makes this event remarkable is not that it happened, but who it happened to. Consider, if the victims were average people instead of a congressperson and judge among others, would you know the name of the alleged shooter?.. [Hear audio >> HEAR MORE]

VIDEO: Malcolm X: "The Chickens Come Home to Roost"
Malcolm XOur ancestor and scholar Malcolm X was many years ahead of his time. On December 4, 1963, he delivered a speech officially titled "God's Judgement of America". Following the speech he gave an answer regarding the assassination of President John Kennedy. It was Malcolm's view that the violence Kennedy had failed to stop, had come back on him. The speech became known as "The Chickens Come Home to Roost." His comments also resulted in the Hon. Elijah Muhammad silencing him. Watch this brief interview given as Malcolm ends his period of silence. His words are still relevant in 2011. Click here to watch

THE ONGOING ROBBING OF HAITI by Paul Pumphrey

The US government and corporations have been carrying out a policy led by Bill Clinton for over fifteen years to rob Haiti and its people, but since the earthquake the US has stepped up its efforts. These policies have allowed for a cholera epidemic to get out of control as well as a national election to be over whelmed with fraud.

African-American Business

These policies have slowed the rebuilding of Haiti leaving over a million people living in the outdoors during Haiti’s rainy and hurricane seasons this year causing untold deaths, illnesses and threats to personal safety. These policies have contributed to government corruption and national despair.  READ MORE
